Neuroplastic Symptoms need Neural Network Treatments

Rough road leading through flat open country - a long road
A long road to create change and make change happen for chronic pain patients

Neuroplastic symptoms are generally those that do not resolve after taking pills or having injections or even with surgeries. When “painkiller” medications no longer has any substantial impact on your chronic pain we need to consider what the alternatives may be.

If you have back surgery for your pain and the pain doesn't go away. What do you do? There is nothing wrong with the surgery, it's just that surgery cannot cure or stop neuroplastic symptoms.

We now know that there can be exceptions because operations can have powerful placebo effect.

Perhaps we have: -

o   Major surgery,

o   Hospital treatment,

o   Specialist attention

o   Careful nursing post-surgery.

All of this health care can make the big difference to the outcome. We all trust and have a belief and that the medical system can fix us.

If this “powerful” medicine doesn't resolve everyone's persistent pain - the pain is neuroplastic.

Therefore, for some people it can feel like the end of the road because there is

  • no medicine

  • no more treatments

that can really make a difference.

Pain management treatment then becomes about learning to live your best life with the pain that you have.

Jean chronic pain coach and kinesiologist standing in her chronic pain clinic

Over the past 20 years as a kinesiologist, I have been getting rid of clients’ pain. Not everyone's but the most. Let's say the 80% - 20% rule is pretty close. Many reducing their pain to a level that they can resume normal lifestyles, careers or return to their studies. Often these are the things that can be lost when you have chronic pain.

Unfortunately, kinesiology being a “energy” treatment is not a recognized therapy by the medical fraternity. Consequently, in my private clinic I was working on the fringe as what can be described as an alternative or complementary medicine.

I have to be totally honest that at the time I didn't fully understand why my treatment was so successful. Certainly, as a trained scientist having done my degree many decades ago, I sometimes did wonder at the changes that could take place.

People with years or decades of musculoskeletal pain could be pain free within a few months or even less.

Howard Schubiner Talks of Chronic Pain Caused by the Brain

However, things were certainly going to change when I came across Howard Schubiner presenting a lecture on Talks at Google. Breakthrough Healing Chronic Pain

By chance in 2020 I was watching this talk by Howard Schubiner explaining that the brain makes our pain. As I watched - to say I was stunned is a complete understatement - I was literally jumping for joy. He was describing the exact process of my chronic pain treatment I’d used for 20 years.

He described how past life experience and the concomitant emotions around stress at that time, could create chronic pain. Certainly, start building neural networks, resilient networks in the brain that caused chronic pain.

Our pain becomes persistent with our brain being the master in charge.

Howard in his lecture described the process of neuroplasticity - the ability of the brain to change the way its neurons connect. Also, the acknowledgement that past life experiences and the stress that goes along with it, can cause physical symptoms.

This research below done by Dr Ian Hislop in 1974 showed that those with powerful negative life incidents were more likely to develop inflammatory bowel disease and symptoms.

Returning to the work of Howard and his colleagues, they have done and continuing to do more up to date research with groups of patients to demonstrate the effectiveness of neuroplastic treatments together with brain scans that can show change in the brain.

He and others like Dave Clarke, Alan Gordon and Georgie Oldfield have showed us a new way or have opened the door for a new way for those people I mentioned above. People in chronic pain that were at the end of the road living with what could be quite severe pain.

Three new important aspects chronic pain treatment: -

1)    Emotions matter and need to be acknowledged and if possible released.

2)    Neural networks develop in the brain, they become reinforced and hence keep us in constant pain.

3)    New positive neural networks can be created and cure the chronic pain.

Five years after watching Howard’s video there are many clinicians worldwide doing the work I was doing 20 years ago - though without the kinesiology muscle checking to identify problematic, stressful life events in the past. Identification of problematic times in their lives is left for patients to identify with the help of therapists trained in this work.

Note: - This is not psychotherapy or counselling, not a talk therapy.

Thousands and thousands of patients worldwide have read the books of

Alan Gordon – The Way Out

Howard Schubiner – Unlearn Your Pain

Dave Clarke – They Can’t Find Anything Wrong!

Georgie Oldfield of SIRPA in the UK - Chronic Pain: Your Key to Recovery

Brain neurons connecting to form neural networks

We now know a lot more about neuroplasticity, how neurons in the brain form networks that can keep us literally going, round and round in circles in our brain. Consolidating and reinforcing the pain that we live with.

Shouldn't we be celebrating?
No longer needing pills, injections, or surgery that we know do not work for neuroplastic symptoms.

Yes, of course! BUT!

Unfortunately change in medicine can be slow even when neuroplastic education of practitioners is desperately needed.

o   Doctors are not trained in neuroplastic symptoms, not yet.

o   Patients can be wary of something different. Though treatment can be simple it can take time and effort, as it’s the patient that needs to create the change in their brains.

Many people with chronic pain and other chronic illnesses have found the quick medical ideas of

o   Just taking a pill and the pain is gone.

o   Or to go through the trauma of surgery and will be fixed [one hopes].

DOES NOT WORK FOR NEUROPLASTIC SYMPTOMS

Unfortunately, at the moment in New Zealand there are few training options for neuroplastic treatments.

Practitioners like myself have trained online. Last year I completed the course ‘Freedom from Chronic Pain’ with Howard Schubiner.

Another practitioner studied with SIRPA, some have studied Pain Reprocessing Therapy, again online.

These courses can be expensive and not everybody is ready to jump into a new therapy without having some knowledge. As a consequence, this has prompted me to develop an introductory online workshop so health professionals and complementary practitioners can by experiential learning have a basic understanding of neuroplastic symptoms and some various treatment options.

The idea behind offering these low-cost options to naturopaths, dieticians, personal trainers, health coaches, physiotherapists, may make a decision to use this training within their practice or to continue to the international associations and training courses available globally.

In 2025 my workshops are being developed and audio recording will be availble for subcription on this website. Please send me expressions of interest.

After over 20 years of having my own pain clinics pain clinics I started natural pain solutions to reach more people, rather than one person at a time. Therefore when I completed my postgraduate pain management studies I wanted to spread the word about holistic self-help techniques that people can use at home. Learn more about me here.
