Chronic Pain Support Program - Introduction

Understand how the Brain and Emotions can impact Pain

This online support program is for those who have a diagnosis that has neuroplastic symptoms that include a range of sensations that can negatively affect you on a daily basis.

  • Neuroplastic symptoms - neuro (brain) plastic (can be changed)

Medical terms you may have heard in regards to persistent pain symptoms are: -

  • Nociplastic - generally not used with patients.

  • Central sensitisation of the nervous system.

There are now different more recent terms used by therapists trained in Mind Body Therapy and Neuroplastic Recovery Therapy.

The ongoing pain or other sensations being experienced may be constant or intermittent, making life especially difficult when you cannot predict when they will happen.

Often made worse when you are stressed or you are: -

  • Unable to get a diagnosis.

  • Told there's nothing wrong as all tests are normal.

  • There is no cure for their ongoing symptoms.

  • Have conditions that no longer respond to treatment.

  • Have been told that they have to live with their chronic pain.

  • No medical treatment has made any difference to their symptoms.

Introducing my chronic pain support program.

After working on a pilot pain program in 2025, this year I want to reach more people. Therefore, I’ve used my experience from last year to create an online support program full of self-help activities, knowledge, and explanations about the brain and neuroplastic symptoms.

Someone recently asked how long it took me to write the program – my answer was over 20 years!

Throughout this program I've added stories either my own, those of my clients, or those from fellow practitioners.

The reason for this is twofold.

Firstly, to make the program easy to study and understand rather than academic technical explanations. Medical speak can be open to misunderstandings and leave us confused.

Secondly, I hope some of these stories will reflect your chronic pain journey and help promote that “aha moment” to inspire your recovery and to learn what you can do to be in control of your pain rather than trapped by it.

Modules contain explanations of examples of what can cause (or worsen) your pain. I've tried to keep explanations simple though at times as I introduce different topics there could be new terminology particularly around the brain and neuroplasticity (neuro-brain, plasticity-can change).

For extra information I've added links to resources on my Natural Pain Solutions website and to other specialist clinicians in the area of neuroplastic or mind body treatments. For those who want to know more I have added a reference section with the titles of my sources.

This program and the information contained does not diagnose any health problems. All pain must be thoroughly investigated by the relevant healthcare professional. It is necessary to ensure that all tissue has healed so that words like “I'm OK” or “there's nothing wrong” can be words to add to your mantras when you are talking with your brain.

One of the difficulties that myself, and fellow clinicians come across is people have had MRIs done because of their pain. Hence what is in fact natural age-related degeneration and disc abnormalities are often given as the reason for your pain. This nocebo, or negative information can make it particularly difficult to change your mindset about your ongoing pain.

This is why you receive modules at two weekly intervals to give you time to practice self-help techniques and identify those that are beneficial for you to start integrating into your lifestyle.

This pain support program is based around a six-month pain pilot program pilot that was done in 2025. This clearly showed the benefits of ongoing support for those with persistent pain.

For example, one person was suffering chronic pain of polymyalgia. At this time, he was on a second bout of this chronic pain and was very open to discover what the ideas of neuroplasticity could do for him as he was not enjoying taking regular pain medication.

Another person in the research had PTSD and felt that she needed to make changes but had little success with other therapists. She was very much at the place of going it alone and struggling when she was given the opportunity to join this pilot research.

The pilot program was for six months but I felt for an online self-directed course that length of duration would be difficult to maintain. My previous online courses were three months long, with weekly downloads and information sessions.

I felt I could improve on this as unfortunately,

  • If a person had some health problems,

  • some personal changes,

  • even a holiday.

They became overloaded.

They received the next weeks information when they haven't spent enough time on the previous information and techniques.

Therefore, the chronic pain support program is 12 weeks – I hope the goldilocks duration!

This course is organized on a module every two weeks as this will give you time to review the information which at times can be extensive within some of the modules.

Throughout the program there are videos that explain what is happening within the program, adding extra information, or telling stories to help tie the information together. The videos on their own do not cover all of the information so there is some reading to do as well.

Scattered throughout the course are creative audios that I've called Neuron Moments. The reason for this unusual name is that ‘neural circuits’ within the brain are a collection of nerve cells or neurons.

Also, I use the word ‘moments’ because nearly all the audios are less than 10 minutes often less than 5 minutes. These Neuron Moments are very valuable as they can help change thoughts or emotions and hence neural pathways - often described as rewiring the brain.

The purpose of each Neuron Moment is for you to initially listen and within your mind follow the story and add your creativity within each story. Later with practice you will be familiar enough to use these techniques anywhere they are needed.

These neuron moments range from a quiet breath relaxation to more story like audios such as a ride in a hot air balloon that enable you throw away emotions, negative thoughts, or happenings that are past their use by date!

Or to plan an imaginary garden to come home to and visit so you can quietly relax.

I hope this program, that is based around the new neuroplastic mind body ideas will be able to help more people than one person sitting opposite me in my clinic.

These amazing little snippets I designed for you to both use for yourself and also to learn the stories within each little, short moment.

In this way you virtually carry in your pocket or your handbag a powerful self-help technique that can help in so many ways.

Neuron moments have evolved from my practice of 20 years of working with people with chronic pain and different levels of worry and anxiety.

There is very much a place for many of the apps and recordings that can help us relax, meditate, some are designed to help us go to sleep.

I'm sure many of you have experienced calming voices, sounds and techniques.

There is much research as to the physical and mental benefits of relaxation techniques, and a variety of different types of meditation and mindfulness.

Neuron moments are none of the above. They are short, easy to use with one of their purposes to teach you how to use: -

  • your breath,

  • your imagination,

  • your thoughts,

  • your emotions.

In a positive way they effect the neural circuits in your brain.

To understand neural circuits, think of that jingle you hear before you go to work, and it goes round and round in your head most of the day.

By which stage it probably is kind of getting a bit sticky and it doesn't take much to bring it front of mind again.

Short moments are best classified as guided imagery.

Or I should more correctly say creative guided imagery. It is very much the case that I give you, the canvas, and an outline of a story.

Then you yourself write the words and create the pictures to match.

How well do you visualise?

One important point that is not or very rarely, mentioned when doing meditation or guided imagery or even mindfulness is aphantasia. There are people who can see or visualise almost nothing, sometimes complete blackness.

Some people when they close their eyes and listen to my stories or even create their own, they see the full picture like you see when you go to the cinema or watch the TV.

But for others it can range from less clarity, to shadows, black and white images or even nothing except blackness.

This is not a problem for short moments as I ask you to use your imagination and we can all imagine, we just do it in different ways.

At times working with your imagination when unable to create the matching pictures some people may find it difficult to just relax and let it happen, so this is another benefit of my moments being short.

If you have elected to meet with me each fortnight I look forward to hearing your progress on zoom.
